May 2nd- My First Day!!

Today was my first official day at Mohawk. I got to meet a few of the members along with other members of the staff, come to find out a girl I use to work with at Bob Evans is working here too! Nick gave me a tour of the building and a rundown of what all I will be doing. He asked me if I would want to work in the pro shop and bar since they could not pay me for my internship and I told him yes, so I will start training for that soon. We talked about how a lot of work needs to be done before the pool can open up. He also asked me if I would be the one making the fliers and updating social media for him. I think it will be a lot of fun working here.

May 4th- Bar Time!!

Today Nick helped me train at the bar. He taught me how to make a couple drinks along with how to pour shots and use the glasses. He also showed me the kitchen and how to cook the few menu items we had. I also had to learn how to make our popcorn with the machine because a lot of the members like to eat popcorn after they golf. I got to meet even more members today too. Some are super nice while others well not so much. It defiantly is hard to remember everyone’s name. This is super important too.

May 10th-Shop and Golf!

Today was all about the pro shop! He taught me where everything was and how it was organized. He showed me how to find things in the system along with checking them out when a member buys them. He showed me all the different forms of payment a person can use; member charge, credit card, cash, store credit, and business charge. That is very confusing, there is a lot of different buttons and I feel like I am going to have to ask him to remind me a lot on how to work the system. I also talked to him about how we need to get more girl clothes in the pro shop.

May 11th- Pool Party Planning!

Since it is getting close to the pool opening Nick and I talked about we should throw a pool opening party! We talked about a couple of different ideas and decided that we should do a beach bash! Him and I then talked about the different food we would want there. We decided burgers, hot dogs, pop, homemade chips, macaroni salad, and drinks. Nick however said if we were going to do this party that I had a lot of work to do out at the pool before we could open it. I am interested to see what I have to do, I have not been out to the pool yet.

May 12th EWWWWWW!!!!

Today Nick took me out the pool and boy was it gross! I have to paint the lawn furniture after power washing them. I have to order new pool toys and a holder for all of them. I need to clean the bathroom and storage room. Then I also have to power wash all the concrete around the pool and the sidewalk leading to the pool that alone will take a while. Oh I also have to power wash the two picnic tables and repaint them white. I tried to convince nick to buy new patio furniture but he said it was not in the budget but may next year.

May 13th-22nd- Clean Clean Clean all I do is Clean

So for the last week and a half, yes 10 days, I have spent every day out in the burning hot sun getting this pool ready. It took me 4 and half days alone just to power wash all the concrete. This job was super rough, I got a face full of mud multiple times. I also ruined a pair of shoes, along with some shorts. I did however save a frogs life, so that was a highlight. But I did burn myself trying to restart the power washer after one of the many times it ran out of gas. It took me another two days to then power wash all the lawn furniture and picnic tables.

I then had to clean out the baby pool and power wash that. I then had to paint the picnic tables and lawn furniture that took another two days, which was mighty hard to do while the mowers were blowing grass on my wet paint. Then the last two days were spent power washing and cleaning the storage and bathrooms along with the shelter. I also order and put out the new toys for the kids around the pool. All in all even though this last week and a half was super long it was worth it to see how great the pool turned out.

Oh it also took them five days to fill the pool with water, since they filled it using their own water, but it took forever and is super green. Nick said they have to shock it with chlorine and asked me if I knew how but I don’t. This then lead him to his next task he wanted my help with and that is hiring life guards to work the pool. Since we are a private pool we do not need a life guard but the board wants us to have one.  So we made a few phone call to those who have applied and set up a few interview for next week. On the bright side nick said that since all the cleaning is done I can start doing the fun stuff like making the flier and promoting the pool party so I am going to start on that tomorrow!

May 23rd-Planning the Pool Party!

Today I got to sit down and work on the flier for beach bash, and the nine and dine. This is an event that we came up with were couples can come out and play nine holes then once done can come and enjoy a nice dinner. We talked and decided to do steaks with bake potatoes and mixed vegetables for the dinner. Then the typical picnic food for the beach bash. We picked out the dates for both events and I created the fliers for both. They are both posted on my website and I think they look very good. I am really excited to open up the pool and see what the members have to say about the nice clean pool and brand new toys.

May 27th- It’s Pool Party Time!!!

Today was the pool bash!!! It was a wonderful sunny day when I showed up to work this morning, but then about an hour after the pool opened it started to thunderstorm and we had to close the pool. The couple of families who were there told me about how nice the pool looked and how they had not seen the pool this clean in years. It was a bummer that the party had to end so soon but it allowed me to learn a very valuable lesson. Today I learned that sometimes things do not go as planned and you just have to role with the punches. After the rain letup and it stopped lightening we were able to reopen the pool. Then the kids that ended up coming out got to enjoy all of the brand new toys I bought them. They said they will be coming back all summer to play with them because it was so much fun! The parents said they liked it too because they now did not have to go out and buy toys and drag them to the pool every time they come. I am looking forward to seeing what money this pool can now bring with it being all cleaned up and a more fun environment.

June 10th- Nine and Dine

Now we are skipping forward some in the summer, the last couple of weeks nothing big has happened I have finished planning and preparing for both events that are this week. Since this internship will go until the end of august I will have more than enough hours needed for my internship and decided that I should do journal entries for the days that were eventful. I mean let’s be honest some days all I do is sit behind the desk signing in members, pulling carts around and watching Ellen on YouTube. But today was the day of the nine and dine, and I think it went great! We had about six or seven couples who came out and enjoyed a nice even of golf and then some amazingly cooked steaks by yours truly. It was a lot of fun to see the couples try to play golf together, clearly most the girls are like me and either have never played or do not play very often! Nick and I got a lot of complements about tonight’s event and Nick said it was better than last years!

June 17th- Beer, Golf and Money

Today I got to work my first golf outing with running the beer cart. Honestly I was so scared at first that I was going to crash the cart or ruin someone’s shot by driving past them or even getting hit by a ball. To my surprise though it was a lot of fun working the beer cart I got to meet a lot of new people, even if they are from Heidelberg! I got to work on my selling skills since it was my job to you know, sell beer. I learned very fast what approaches worked and did not work based on the age of the players and how big of drinkers they are. I also learned that the better they are playing the less they will drink because they do not want to ruin their good streak by getting drunk. So I drove around honestly hoping people were playing bad just for the simple fact that I could say “well you are still having fun and beet makes everything better!” Most the time they then would buy a beer or four, I actually even had a few guys shot gun some beers.

July 1st- 4th of July Outting!

Skipping forward to the next outing I worked, this one was much, much different because I was not actually selling beers. It was a company outing so the company was paying for everything. They just had us keep track of the amount of beers we gave out and charged them that way. The way nick had us keep track was by keeping all of the boxes of beer so we could add them all up. So while I was out driving around it was a lot easier to “sell” beer when you are able to say hey guys you want some beer, its free!! This then turned into guys filling up bags of beer to carrying around on their carts and drink while I was not there to hand them another. Nick said we did a great job promoting the beer, that we did about 500 dollars more in beer sales than last year. This did lead to a lot drunks by time dinner came around, that we had catered by Scott Lyons.  While this was funny it was also a bit um awkward as one of the guy was going around saying he was on girls on wild and lifting up his shirt to show everyone his “goodies”.

July 5th Let the planning commence!

Today Nick started talking to me about member guest and everything we have to for it. Member Guest is the clubs biggest event of the year. It is a three day event, Friday-Sunday. We have to come up with a theme, food for all three days, sponsors, entertainment, decorations, sign up members and their guest, and make sure we have enough carts and things. We decided to do an old Hollywood theme with the color scheme of red and black. I also contacted Scott about meeting with him to go over our menu for dinner. I however need to find a different caterer for breakfast since Scott does not do breakfast. So I called around to a few places and am waiting to hear back from them. We also talked about different ideas for entertainment and came up with a few different things we think would be good that I am looking into tomorrow.

July 22-24th- MEMBER GUEST

So the last couple of weeks have been super stressful! I helped plan and put on yet another event, glow golf. This was a nice simple event that allowed our members to come out one night and golf in the dark we had glow in the dark balls and light in all the holes. It was actually really cool! Besides that though I have been super-duper busy with planning and preparing for member guest which is tomorrow! I have been shopping three different times for decorations. Made 20 center pieces for the tables for the formal dinner. Booked both caterers and planned meals with both of them. This was something too let me tell you, I feel like every caterer I called had something going on the weekend of member guest. But finally I found a caterer that was willing to come to Tiffin to do it for us. Scott of course was amazing with great ideas for lunch and dinner.

Then I had to do all of the sponsorship's. We have our big tournament sponsor which is Old Fort Bank, then you have all of your corporate sponsors which means they donated $500 dollars or more, then a hole sponsor which was a donation of $100. With the corporate sponsors they also get their company name on a banner hung around the course on tournament day. So I also had to make those. I had to call multiple companies to try to have them donate to our event, and I actually got quite a few places! I also had to help nick make the booklets and packages that the members get when they come to play and their guest get one too, so that was a lot of work too! But after weeks of preparing, planning, stress, and everything not going right it finally happened this past weekend, Member Guest. It by far was the longest weekend of my life but so worth it. I had so many members come up and tell me how great this Member Guest was and how it was the best one yet so that made me so happy! It was a great way to end my internship. However I will be finishing the summer and fall working there this was the last big event for my internship, and I learned so much from it!
